HISTORY OF YEWA DESCENDANTS UNION UK AND IRELAND*

Many Yewa indigenes in the UK were members of various groups associated to their towns in Yewaland. The aims and objectives of different groups focused primarily on the development of their towns. These groups came together in 2009 to form an association representing the whole of Ogun West senatorial district called Yewa Awori Descendants Union.

In 2012, the organisation reconstituted to focus mainly on the social-political, economic and cultural values of Yewaland. The group became Yewa Descendants Union (YDU). The geographical spread of the organisation included UK and Republic of Ireland.

The first major task of YDU was to strategise on the development of Yewaland and celebrate the cultural identity of Yewa people in diaspora. This led to organising Yewa Day on 24th August 2013 in London. The event was attended by the Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, the Grand Patron of YDU. Other dignitaries at the occasion included 24 Royal Fathers across Yewaland and the Governor of Ogun state.

YDU has championed many charitable works to empower the people of Yewa and to contribute towards the development of Yewaland.

YDU UK and Ireland is a founding member of Yewa People Development Council (YPDC), an umbrella organisation for all Yewa organisations in Nigeria and diaspora.
